DESCRIPTION: Low-energy manifestations of quantum gravity or standard mode
l extensions could be effectively modelled as alternative theories of grav
ity. Gravitational waves offer a new way to test deviations from general r
elativity. I will discuss\, from a theory perspective\, the challenges of
probing such deviations in the strong field regime. I will also comment on
what we have learned so far about alternative theories from the recent gr
 avitational wave detections.
