DESCRIPTION:A particular concern across the University of late is the disp
 arity in results between women and men in the Tripos\, and one potential c
 ause often cited is ‘writing style’. In fact\, many female undergradua
 tes have reported that they have been told to ‘write like a man’ by su
 pervisors of both sexes. This talk will look at what actually matters in a
 cademic writing style in English\, thereby (hopefully) defusing the carele
 ssly phrased advice
