DESCRIPTION:At the end of October 2017 French authorities acted on a six-m
onth-old international arrest warrant issued by a judge in Ouagadougou and
at Charles de Gaulle arrested the brother of the former President of Burk
ina Faso. Francois Compaoré was wanted in connection with a recently re-o
pened inquiry into the murder\, in 1998\, of renowned Burkinabè journalis
t Norbert Zongo\, an event which precipitated unprecedented mass mobilisat
ion on the streets\, with the population "thirsty for justice". In this pr
esentation\, Thomas Probert—who has for the past three years been resear
ching the impact of national commissions of inquiry in Africa—will intro
 duce the Government's response\, its reception\, work\, and impact\, and t
hen trace the way in which this marked the beginning of a two-decade-long
process of insisting upon justice for a flagrant violation of the right to
  life.
