DESCRIPTION: This talk will address three phases of the research on values
in mathematics education. In the first I will review some of the early si
gnificant explorations. These grew out of concerns about curricula develop
ments which were leaving some students behind. My own research contributio
n has followed the anthropological approach. However\, secondly\, looking
forwards will necessarily involve new ideas from both theory and practices
. So finally\, I shall explore the possibilities offered by some radical t
 eaching and learning approaches.
