SUMMARY:Play it on the Edge - the Fun\, the Risks\, and the Lessons - Aaro
 n Yi Ding (TUM)

CONTACT:Liang Wang
DESCRIPTION:This talk will introduce three systems built for edge/IoT netw
 orks\, namely iConfig\, FADES\, and Securebox\, intended for configuration
\, offloading\, and security hardening\, respectively. The initial results
have been published recently at workshops and as poster/demo of SIGCOMM a
nd MobiCom. Besides sharing first-hand experience on system development\,
the talk will reveal several pitfalls and lessons learned through live cas
es. The goal is twofold: 1) to disclose blind spots and interesting direct
ions in edge/IoT domain that deserve further investigations\, and 2) to sh
are observations on doing system research in such “buzzword bingo” dom
ain\, especially what may hinder us from transferring the (mostly fun) sys
tem work into solid scientific outcome.\n\nBio:\nAaron is a Postdoc at the
BMW-endowed Chair of Connected Mobility in TU Munich\, working with Prof.
Joerg Ott since 2016. His research is centered on system networking. He r
eceived his MSc and PhD both with distinction from the University of Helsi
nki. Prior to TUM\, he has worked at University of Helsinki (-2016)\, Colu
mbia University (2014) and University of Cambridge (2013)\, advised by Pro
 f. Sasu Tarkoma\, Prof. Henning Schulzrinne\, and Prof. Jon Crowcroft\, re
spectively. He was awarded the ACM SIGCOMM Best of CCR 2014\, the Nokia Fo
undation Scholarships in 2012 and 2013\, and the “Staff Member of the Ye
ar” in the Department of Computer Science (Birthplace of Linux) at Unive
 rsity of Helsinki.
