DESCRIPTION:I will introduce the so-called energy landscape analysis of mu
ltivariate\ntime series data. In this analysis\, one identifies the state
of the system\nat each time point as the position of a "ball" constrained
on an energy\nlandscape inferred from data. A ball tends to go downhill on
the energy\nlandscape whereas it sometimes goes uphill to transit from on
e local minimum\nof the energy to another\, possibly corresponding to majo
r dynamical\ntransitions. The method is based on the Ising model (also kno
wn as Boltzmann\nmachine). The application of the method to neuroimaging a
nd other data is\nillustrated. I will also pose technical challenges we ar
e interested in\naddressing.\n\nNaoki Masuda received his PhD in 1998 from
the University of Tokyo. He\nworked as Lecturer and then Associate Profes
sor at the University of Tokyo\nbetween 2006 and 2014. He moved to Univers
ity of Bristol\, Department of\nEngineering Mathematics as Senior Lecturer
 \, March 2014. His research\ninterests include network science\, mathemati
cal biology and neuroscience (in\nparticular\, brain networks and social n
 euroscience).
