DESCRIPTION:This paper considers the role of geographical description in t
he scientific consumption of a region: the county of Cornwall\, England. T
he paper takes a\nnumber of different scientific fields--particularly geol
ogy and antiquarianism--and considers their deployment of various modes of
cartography to display a\nregion for consumption by both a local and wide
r scientific public. A number of examples are discussed: the early geologi
cal maps of Cornwall\, produced by the\nRoyal Geological Society of Cornwa
ll\; antiquarian field-excursions and the maps that accompanied them\; as
well as the numerous guidebooks written for the scientific tourist\, with
suggested itineraries and sites of inquiry.\n
