DESCRIPTION:The lecture will consider the reasons why the new nuclear powe
r stations must have a role in meeting the country's future electricity ne
eds and making the transition to a low carbon economy. EDF Energy is now b
uilding a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C in Somerset\, and i
s developing plans for new reactors at Sizewell in Suffolk and Bradwell in
Essex\, working in partnership with CGN of China. This lecture will cover
the development and set up phase for mega-projects such as Hinkley Point
 C. This will include the factors to be considered when selecting sites for
new nuclear power stations\; the planning\, consenting and licensing proc
esses\; financing\; organisational design and contractual frameworks. Ensu
ring that future projects remain competitive with credible alternatives wi
ll mean that costs for the next new nuclear projects must be driven down\,
and this talk will examine how this can best be achieved in the UK.
