DESCRIPTION:Modern data analytics and processing are at the heart of enter
prise \ncomputing and drive advances in many scientific disciplines. In ad
dition\nto designing new models and techniques for analysing the data delu
ge\,\nwe also need systems support that makes the analysis more performant
\nand efficient when executed on modern and future hardware platforms.\n\n
Addressing such a challenge requires an effort that is beyong what can\nbe
typically done within a single layer of the system stack: applications\na
re typically unaware of the run-time state of the machine and the \noperat
ing system does not know what the goals of the applications are. \nIn my t
alk\, I will give an overview of my research on co-designing databases \na
nd operating systems and show the benefits of a holistic approach by \nope
ning the interfaces and customising the system stack for modern \ndata pro
cessing workloads.\n\nBio:Jana Giceva is a Lecturer in the Department of C
omputing at Imperial\nCollege London. Prior to that she completed her PhD
in the Systems \nGroup at ETH Zurich\, where she worked with Gustavo Alons
o and Timothy\nRoscoe. Her research interests are in systems support for d
ata science \nand Big Data to enable efficient use of modern and future ha
rdware. \nThe scope of her research spans multiple systems areas: from the
data \nprocessing layer to operating systems\, including hardware acceler
ators \nfor data processing. She is the recipient of the ETH medal for her
\nPhD dissertation awarded in 2017 and the Google European PhD Fellowship
  \nin operating systems in 2014.\n
