DESCRIPTION:Renationalisation of the Railways. A CU Railway Club Public De
bate\n \n19.45 Mong Hall\, Sidney Sussex College\, Cambridge (Sidney Stree
t - Opposite Sainsburys)\n \nThe Cambridge University Railway Club (CURC)
exists to celebrate and discuss the railway industry. Once a year we invit
e the public to join us in an open debate on a topical issue within the ra
ilway industry.\n \nRail renationalisation appears to be gaining momentum
with rail users and politicians championing the concept. But what does ren
ationalisation of the railways actually mean and what would it look like?
We must ask: is the current system broken and beyond repair? How could the
current privatised railway innovate and create a new system which works f
or rail users (and the taxpayer)?\n \nTo address the concept of renational
isation\, we have invited key figures to debate the topic who understand t
he challenges currently facing the railway industry.\n \nThe panel is form
 ed of (alphabetical):\n \nChristian Wolmar – pro-renationalisation Railw
ay Columnist for Rail Magazine.\n\nDavid Franks – Chief Executive of Iar
nród Éireann\, the nationalised Irish Railway. \n\nMichael Holden – fo
rmer Chairman of Directly Operated Railways\, the government owned operato
r of East Coast Railways.\n\nPaul Plummer – Chief Executive of Rail Deli
very Group\, formed by members from Network Rail\; the train operating com
panies\; and the freight operating companies.\n\nTony Miles – Railway Jo
urnalist for Modern Railways.\n \nFormat: 10 minute speeches by the panell
ists\, before opening the debate to the floor.\n \nFully open to the publi
c\, who are actively encouraged to attend and join the debate. For further
information\, email: railway@cusu.cam.ac.uk \n \nThe Mong Hall can be fou
nd\, on entering college vere right and through the archway (Left of the C
hapel Door). The hall is first on the right and shall be signposted. \n...
