DESCRIPTION:<span>Cyril Stanley Smith was a distinguished metallurgist who
  eventually left that discipline to pursue a wider interest in science and
  technology\, and  their relation to art. He was critical of his contempor
 aries\, as being too  preoccupied with thepursuit of perfect idealised ord
 er. Although his ideas  were tentative he was(like D&rsquo\;Arcy Wentworth
  Thompson) a prophet. As such  he inspired others\,including the present s
 peaker\, who will describe his adventures  with foam (afavourite prototype
  of Smith)\, taking him into art and architecture as Smith would have like
 d - for scientists\, he said\, should be <i>playful</i>.</span>
