DESCRIPTION:[Note : Cecilia will be joining the Computer Lab in March\, 20
08.]\n\nMost of the existing research work in mobile ad hoc networking is\
nbased on the assumption that a path exists between the sender and the\nre
ceiver.\nOn the other hand\, applications of decentralised mobile systems
are\noften characterised by network partitions. Examples include emergency
 \nsupport networks\, military field networks\, infostation-based systems\n
for connectivity in remote areas and data collection in sensor\nnetworks f
or wildlife monitoring.\nAs a consequence delay tolerant networking resear
ch has received\nconsiderable attention in the recent years as a means to
obviate to\nthe gap between ad hoc network research and real applications.
\nIn this talk I will describe our advances in the use of opportunistic\nr
outing in decentralized networks containing frequent and changing\npartiti
ons. I will describe our context-aware routing model which\nuses Kalman Fi
lters to predict the best carrier for messages among\nneighbouring nodes a
nd its extensions to mobile sensor networks and\npublish/subscribe applica
tions in human networks. I will report about\nthe evaluation of the approa
ches through simulation with both social\nmobility and animal mobility mod
 els.
