llow">
During the interactions between ice covers and ship/offshore str
uctures\, the ice cover is broken into small fragments. The breaking patte
rn of ice cover is dominated by the geometric properties of ship/offshore
structures\, besides the ice parameters of thicknesses\, strengths\, drift
ing velocities. Meanwhile\, the breaking pattern of ice cover has a close
relationship with the ice loads on the structures. To research the propert
ies of ice loads\, \, the breaking patterns of ice covers and the ice load
s during the actions on the ship hulls and the fixed jacket platform piles
 are concluded by the field observations in the Antarctic navigation and t
he Bohai Sea\, respectively. Moreover\, the discrete element method (DEM)
with bonded spheres is also adopted to model numerically the breaking patt
erns of ice cover. The influences of the breaking patterns of ice cover on
 the magnitude and frequency of ice loads are discussed based on the DEM r
esults. The field data and the DEM results were compared to determine
the relationship between the breaking length of ice cover and the ice load
. &nbsp\;

Keywords: Ice cover\, Breaking pa
