DESCRIPTION:The initial reluctance to adopt the fracture mechanics approac
 h in ice mechanics and ice dynamics will be examined. The fundamentals of 
 fracture mechanics and different fracture criteria will be reviewed. The r
 elationship between models that idealize the crack-tip as a singular stres
 s field and those that include a cohesive zone will be explored. Experimen
 tal values of material parameters determined in the laboratory and in the 
 field will be examined. Time dependent and material effects on crack growt
 h initiation and during crack propagation will be discussed. The limitatio
 ns of fracture mechanics will be explored.
