DESCRIPTION:The accurate determination of nuclear and magnetic structure i
s crucial\nin understanding new materials. Owing to the special properties
of the\nneutron\,\nnamely the almost random variation of the scattering l
engths as a\nfunction of atomic number and the fact that it possesses a ma
gnetic\nmoment\, neutron\ndiffraction can reveal delicate structural and m
agnetic details hard to\nobtain via other techniques. However\, neutron sc
attering is essentially\na flux\nlimited technique compared to some of the
se other techniques and is\ntherefore associated with the need for large s
amples. In this talk\, I\nwill briefly\nreview some recent developments in
neutron instrumentation and sample\nenvironment which have enabled cuttin
 g edge experiments to be performed\non functional\nmaterials and/or small
samples and then focus on scientific examples\ntaken in the fields of comp
 lex magnetic structures\, multiferroics\, thin\nfilm magnetism\nand Molecu
 lar Organic Frameworks.
