DESCRIPTION:More pig meat is eaten globally than any other meat\, and Stre
ptococcus suis is a leading cause of entrenched endemic disease in pigs an
d a major driver of antibiotics use in this species around the world. In a
ddition the pathogen presents a zoonotic threat in some regions\, notably
in Asia. This talk attempts to link key practical clinical questions with
advances in research recently completed or ongoing in Cambridge\, notably
based on genomic analysis of what is believed to be the largest clinically
phenotype collection of S. suis in the world. The question of how to harn
ess genomic research to underpin real-life clinical outcomes for everyday
pathogens is of broader relevance and this talk sets out to offer some ins
 ights into that wider question.
