DESCRIPTION:Basic sets can be a powerful tool in modular representation th
 eory of finite groups\, sometimes helping in constructing Brauer character
 s or in reducing the problem of determining decomposition matrices.\n\nIn 
 this talk\, I will present some fairly old results on basic sets for the s
 ymmetric and alternating groups\, and show how the methods and results can
  be generalised to the double Schur covers of these groups when the charac
 teristic is odd. In all these groups\, we exhibit basic sets by using perf
 ect isometries between blocks of complex characters.\n\nThis is joint work
  with Olivier Brunat (Université Paris 7).
