DESCRIPTION:A number of candidate embeddings of inflation in string theory
now exist but clear statements about their predictions remain elusive. By
combining numerical approaches to computing observables with recent devel
opments in machine learning\, it is now possible to efficiently study how
predictions depend on modelling assumptions. We find an information bottle
neck which can impose strong hierarchies in the sensitivity of predictions
to different modelling ingredients. This provides hope that robust predic
tions may possible despite significant holes in our understanding of the u
nderlying construction. In this talk I will describe current work in progr
ess\, using axion monodromy as an example.
