DESCRIPTION:Thermal conductivity measurements constitute a bulk and direct
ional probe of all delocalized excitations in materials. The dependence o
f the conductivity on temperature and magnetic field can be used to identi
fy novel excitations and phase transitions in quantum materials. In this
talk\, I will describe how measurements are made at ultralow temperatures
and present results on so-called 'spin-ice' materials whose elementary exc
itations are analogous to mobile magnetic monopoles. Our study includes s
ome interesting observations on the effects of disorder on these materials
 .
