DESCRIPTION:All stars with masses ~< 10M_sun will end their lives as white
 \ndwarfs: Earth-sized\, burnt-out stellar embers sustained by\nelectron de
generacy. The steep slope of the stellar initial mass\nfunction implies th
at the overwhelming majority of all stars born\nin the Galaxy will evolve\
, or already have evolved\, into white\ndwarfs.\n\nThe study of these stel
lar remnants links into a wide range of\nastrophysical topics\, including
the pathways towards supernova\ntype Ia\, the galactic star formation hist
ory\, stellar mass loss\,\nand the bulk composition of exo-planets. I will
review the\nenormous progress in this research field that has been driven
  by\nlarge-scale surveys and new state-of-the art instrumentation\, and\np
rovide an outlook on the scientific potential of ongoing and\nfuture proje
 cts including Gaia\, DESI\, SDSS-V\, and LSST.\n
