DESCRIPTION:The so-called Stefan problem describes the temperature distrib
ution in\na homogeneous medium undergoing a phase change\, for example ice
melting \nto water. An important goal is to describe the structure of the
interface\nseparating the two phases.\n\nIn its stationary version\, the
Stefan problem can be reduced to the\nclassical obstacle problem\, which c
onsists in finding the equilibrium\nposition of an elastic membrane whose
boundary is held fixed and which\nis constrained to lie above a given obst
acle. \n\nThe aim of this talk is to give a general overview of the classi
cal\ntheory of the obstacle problem\, and then discuss recent\ndevelopment
s on the structure of interfaces\, both in the\nstatic and the parabolic s
 ettings.\n
