DESCRIPTION:I will describe the early results of an instrument design stud
y for the European (42m diameter) Extremely Large Telescope. EAGLE is inte
nded to be a Multi-Object Adaptive Optics fed deployable Integral Field Un
it spectrograph working in the near infra-red. A consortium currently invo
lving 2 UK and 4 French groups have received a 2 year contract to produce
a conceptual design. I will outline the science case\, and describe our cu
rrent ideas about the adaptive optics feed and the instrument.
