DESCRIPTION:Since differentiation generally lowers exponents\, it is strai
ghtforward that the ring C[x\, x^-1^] is a finitely generated module over
the ring of differential operators C[x\, d/dx]. This innocent looking fact
has been vastly generalized to a statement about holonomic D-modules\, us
ing the beautiful theory of Bernstein's b-function (or Bernstein--Sato pol
ynomial). I will give a brief overview of the classical theory before disc
ussing some recent developments concerning a p-adic analytic analogue.\nTh
is is joint work with Konstantin Ardakov and Simon Wadsley.
