DESCRIPTION:We consider the behaviour of quantum Hall edges away from the
Luttinger\nliquid fixed point that occurs in the low energy\, large system
limit.\nUsing the close links between quantum Hall wavefunctions and conf
ormal\nfield theories we construct effective Hamiltonians from general\npr
inciples and then constrain their forms by considering the effect of\nbulk
symmetries on the properties of the edge. In examining the effect\nof bul
k interactions on this edge we find remarkable simplifications to\nthese e
ffective theories which allow for a very accurate description of\nthe low-
energy physics of quantum Hall edges relatively far away from\nthe Lutting
er liquid fixed point\, and which apply to small systems and\nhigher energ
 ies.\n
