DESCRIPTION:The origins of our solar system can be investigated by observa
tional astronomy\, computer simulations\, and materials on Earth that date
from the beginning of the solar system\, that are brought to earth by spa
ce missions or fall as meteorites. Chondrites are primitive meteorites\,
that have been largely unaltered from pre-planetary times. They are probes
of the environment and timescales of the protoplanetary disk. I will disc
uss their composition and texture and introduce some of our recent researc
h showing that chondritic constituents formed over several millions of yea
rs and record an evolving disk.
