DESCRIPTION:Richard Hobbs\, Head of Nuffield Department of Primary Care He
alth Sciences\, University of Oxford\n \nA more applied clinical research
focus to many developed healthcare systems\, like the NHS\, potentially hi
ghlights the importance of more research that answers questions relevant t
o primary care\, especially with service changes that result in most patie
nts with chronic disease being managed in primary care. This necessitates
the greater involvement of service primary care in the delivery of clinica
l research\, and especially clinical trials and high quality epidemiologic
al studies\, not least to help deliver adequate patient recruitment and pr
oduce generalisable results. \n \nHowever\, primary care is an exemplar fo
r a “complex research environment”: since it comprises multiple\, mult
i-disciplinary practitioners in small units\, with limited space and (usua
lly) low research experience and high service demands. \n \nAcademic prim
ary care has helped enable the greater research capacity of the complex en
vironment of general practice to host more and better research. But over a
nd above hosting research\, are the research questions initiated and deliv
ered by academic primary care important?\n\nThis seminar will be chaired J
onathan Mant\, Professor of Primary Care Research and Head of the Primary
Care Unit at the University of Cambridge.
