 els will be presented to help interpret\nthe processes which control explo
 sive volcanic eruptions. The talk will include descriptions of the \ntrigg
 ers of eruptions\, the controls on how liquid magma transforms into ash an
 d also the dynamics\nof giant ash plumes  which can rise 30-40 km into the
  atmosphere and massive ash flows which can \ntravel distances up to 90 km
 .
