DESCRIPTION:Dr Nathalie Vriend is a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research
Fellow in the DAMTP\, Cambridge. She received her PhD from CalTech in 201
0 for her work on the phenomenon of Booming Sand Dunes. Her research focus
es on granular flows such as snow avalanches and sand dunes. Despite their
importance\, granular materials remain poorly understood\; due to the lac
k of a comprehensive physical description\, mathematical tools and techniq
ues are insufficient to fully predict their behavior at this time. Dr Vrie
nd is an experimentalist\, but she also employs numerical simulations to d
evelop analytical models and to form a comprehensive picture of open resea
rch questions.\n\nThis talk is kindly sponsored by Schlumberger.\n\nMember
