DESCRIPTION:My session focuses on the role of ‘facilitators’ in interv
iew-based qualitative research in bureaucratic settings. Facilitators are
individuals or groups that are not exclusive controllers of access\, usual
ly described as gatekeepers. Based on recent fieldwork in state ministries
\, government agencies and international organisations\, I argue that the
relational dimension of ‘doing fieldwork’ often tends to be underestim
ated\, and that the role of facilitators is a crucial component of researc
h with ‘elites’ and experts. I also share insights into affiliations w
ith academic and policy institutions beyond the university\, and the relev
ance these affiliations can have for the research process.\n
