DESCRIPTION:My thesis seeks to answer the question of how states limit the
professional autonomy of journalists during times of political transforma
 tion. I conducted fieldwork in Crimea\, Moscow\, and Kyiv in 2016-2017\, i
nterviewing journalists who have worked on disputed territories and who ha
ve lived and worked through periods of regime change. My main field site\,
Crimea\, is a peninsula on the Black Sea that was occupied and annexed by
Russia in 2014. Since then\, Russia and Ukraine have engaged in a territo
rial dispute over the region. I will discuss security issues I faced in th
e field\, conceptual issues relating to my relationships with study partic
ipants\, and open questions I am still facing as I analyse my data.
LOCATION:Seminar Room\, Department of Geography\, Downing Site
