DESCRIPTION:Laura James who is Vice President of Engineering at AlertMe.co
 m Ltd\, a Cambridge-based start-up developing a revolutionary kind of home
  monitoring system. _AlertMe_ uses broadband to connect to a network of wi
 reless sensors in your home\, so that the servers are in touch with your h
 ome 24/7. The system is highly flexible and reliable\, and easily configur
 ed on _AlertMe’s_ secure website to inform the user via mobile phone whe
 never anything of specific interest occurs. \n\nLaura was the first employ
 ee at _AlertMe_\, and has been involved with developing the technology and
  launching the product nationally\, whilst helping the company grow to 25 
 people.  She will share with us the story of this high tech start-up\, the
  challenges and triumphs in technology and business development.  She’ll
  also talk about careers in research and development. \n\nPrior to _AlertM
 e_\, Laura worked for AT&T Labs in the US and UK\, where her work ranged f
 rom research and concept design to prototyping\, for a variety of projects
  to investigate wirelessly and wired networked consumer electronics device
 s of all kinds. She is an enthusiastic advocate of user-centric design met
 hods\, and attempts to improve public understanding of technology through 
 media and outreach work.  Laura holds Masters and PhD degrees in Engineeri
 ng from the University of Cambridge. She is a Chartered Engineer\, a 2007 
 NESTA Crucible Fellow\, and an alumnus of the Royal Academy of Engineering
  Leadership Award and Executive Engineer schemes.\n
