Abstract
In this talk, I will provide an overview of our studies on phonological processing difficulties, both at cortical and brainstem levels, in impaired language development. I will show how these processing difficulties are influenced by genetic predispositions and discuss underlying brain structures. The consistent observation that boys seem to be at higher risk of impaired language development than girls suggests sex hormone concentration to also play an important role in language outcome. In line with this idea, I will present our research on the impact of sex hormone concentration on language development during mini-puberty, that is a period of elevated sex hormone concentration during the first six months of life, when also language-relevant brain areas undergo massive developmental changes.
