Abstract
How do great works of art become great? Or better, how do they become known? A “national heritage” consciousness cannot exist if “heritage” is not known to a majority of the population. The talks looks at how, during the nineteenth century, a visual culture of heritage was created through reproductive techniques. In particular, it will analyse the rise and fall of the Cast Museum in Europe.
Series This talk is part of the Darwin College Humanities and Social Sciences Seminars series.
