Abstract
The people that work in data centres are often curiously absent from the science fictional images of these buildings that circulate in the mass media. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork conducted in subterranean data bunkers, this talk will explore the social dimensions of ‘Big Data’ from an anthropological perspective, examining how this visual elision relates to imaginaries of data as objective, neutral and free from the contaminating agency of human beings.
