Abstract
Today’s IT infrastructure requires large amounts of power, most of which is generated by burning fossil fuels. In the data center alone, the USA spent an estimated 61 TW-h in the year 2006. In this talk, I’ll motivate the problem, and discuss a promising technology—server virtualization—which promises to vastly reduce the power consumption of data centers. I’ll give an technical overview of Xen 3.x, show some performance numbers, and look ahead to what further solutions there might be to help us save the planet.
