Stratified flows: From the lab to the ocean

Abstract
“We live in a stratified world; the density of the ocean increases with depth while that of the atmosphere decreases with height. Our research focuses on both fundamental and applied studies of stratified fluids, with particular consideration to ocean environments. Here, we present the latest results from two ongoing experiments. The first concerns the generation of internal waves by ocean ridges, and uses the latest experimental techniques to study dynamics at the Luzon Strait, which is the origin of some of the largest internal waves ever observed. The second concerns a remarkable new mechanism we have discovered for spontaneously propelling objects in stratified environments.”
