1969: a special issue of the Harvard Educational Review
βOur intent is to explore the relationship of architectural values to significant human experience and in particular to basic educational goals β to question if and how the physical environment informs and shapes and liberates the human spiritβ (Preface).

Keynote speakers will respond to the 1969 papers with plenty of time for all present to discuss the aims and values of educational architecture today (and to explore possible futures for schools and other environments).

This is the last of three Architecture and Education seminars in 2018 held at the Faculty of Education and funded by a University of Cambridge Arts and Humanities Research Award. This free seminar, chaired by Cathy Burke with Dr Adam Wood from the University of Florence, will explore the aims and values of educational architecture today. Time for discussion among participants will be complemented by talks from three experts on design for education β Steve Higgins, (Professor of Education, University of Durham); Ola Uduku (Professor of Architecture, Manchester School of Architecture)and Bob Wallbridge, Head of Design at Hampshire County Council β who will share their experiences and draw on the 1969 Special Issue of the Harvard Educational Review written by leading architects including Aldo van Eyck, Herman Hertzberger, Giancarlo De Carlo and others, that has inspired this seminar series.
