Abstract
The radial velocity (RV) method is one of the most succesful methods employed so far in the search for exoplanets. Its operating principle is to detect slight Doppler shifts in colour of stellar light that could betray the presence of one or more planets. However, the effect is extremely subtle and easily swamped by signatures of the fiery motion of stellar atmospheres. In this talk, I will show how RV measurements intended for exoplanet research can also be used to study stellar pulsations, and how the young field of asteroseismology can in turn help mapping more of the Milky Way’s faraway worlds.
