Abstract
I review the life cycle of supermassive black hole binaries, focusing on their gravitational interactions with stars in the galactic nucleus, which produce many interesting astrophysical phenomena: tidal disruptions, ejection of hypervelocity stars, formation of galactic cores, and of course, the shrinking and eventual coalescence of the binary itself. I describe the challenges in modelling these systems with conventional N-body codes, and present an alternative Monte Carlo approach that overcomes these difficulties.
