“Twenty years ago, Pascal Khoo Thwe, a Kayan Padaung tribesman from southeast Burma, was a student leader involved in the 1988 nationwide pro-democracy Burmese uprising. After the military coup, he fled into the jungle, helping support around 400 refugees close to the Thai-Burma border. A letter sent to him by John Casey, a Cambridge don he had earlier met in Mandalay, not only reached the other side of the world, but resulted him being rescued from the jungle and enrolling to read English at Caius College. He graduated in 1995 and in April 2002 published his award-winning biography, “From the Land of Green Ghosts: A Burmese Odyssey”, which tells his journey to freedom despite almost unimaginable odds.”
