Bioluminescence in nature is a long-reported phenomenon which can create an impressive illumination of the sea. Dinoflagellates are plankton and some of them exhibit bioluminescence when disturbed. In this talk we will focus on the Pyrocystis lunula, a croissant-shaped dinoflagellate. We will discuss its response to mechanical stimulation applied by a flow in terms of light emission. The behaviour of this alga has been investigated combining computations and experiments.
