Abstract
The problem of counting lattice elements in locally compact groups is a natural generalization of such classical results as the asymptotics for the number of lattice points in the Euclidean or hyperbolic plane. We will describe a general approach to such counting problems based on ergodic theory, which has the advantage of providing good error estimates uniformly over families of subgroups satisfying property (tau). Based on joint work with Amos Nevo.
