Abstract
After giving a pedagogical introduction to the phenomenon of shear banding in complex fluids, I will discuss research aimed at modelling (i) the kinetics of shear band formation upon shear startup, and (ii) erratic dynamics of shear bands once they have fully formed. Time permitting I will also discuss (iii) recent work on shear banding in biologically active suspensions.
