Abstract
LAMMPS is a popular software package for simulation of particle-based methods at atomic, meso or continuum scale. This project, in collaboration with Dr Krishna Kumar (Civil Engineering), aims to build on the current LAMMPS GRANULAR package for discrete element method simulation towards simulation of landslides at realistic scale. This will require simulations with orders of magnitude more particles than currently possible and so requires maximum performance by adopting novel hardware including many-core and GPGPU . The framework in LAMMPS that is used to achieve this is KOKKOS , a C++ library that allows methods to be implemented with portable and cost-free abstractions. I will in introduce LAMMPS and give an overview of the KOKKOS library before talking about the development required to implement the granular package using KOKKOS and the science cases enabled by this.
