Gaia is a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency that launched at the end of 2014. The goal of the mission is to map our Galaxy performing a census of more than 1 billion objects in the Milky Way. The project involves more than 400 scientists and software engineers around Europe. The IoA in Cambridge hosts one of the 5 data centres processing the Gaia telemetry to produce science-grade data products which are made publicly available to the scientific community through data releases. This presentation provides an overview of some of the data processing challenges posed by Gaia and how they were successfully tamed using distributed systems like Hadoop and Spark.
