The String Theory Swampland

Abstract
The question of how many quasi-realistic string theory vacua exist has been the subject of recent controversy. Claims for the number of de Sitter vacua range between 0 and 10^500. More generally, it is important to know whether there are universal properties of consistent string theory solutions – for example, are transPlanckian inflationary field excursions consistent within a theory of quantum gravity? In this talk I review the constructions of quasi-realistic string models and the so-called swampland conjectures on how their properties are constrained by quantum gravity. I also describe work in progress on CFT _3 duals of AdS_4 moduli stabilisation scenarios. In the context of the Large Volume Scenario this leads to sharp statements about the conformal dimensions of low-lying single trace operators and the form of their higher-point interactions.
