Pathophysiology of feline diabetes mellitus

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrine disease in cats. Feline diabetes mellitus shares many characteristics with human type 2 diabetes mellitus. The general prevalence of diabetes mellitus, and in particular of feline and human type 2 diabetes, has risen dramatically in recent years. This increase parallels the rise in obesity rates in the cat and human population. Obesity and its ensuing metabolic consequences constitute major risk factors for human type 2 and for feline diabetes mellitus. I will discuss the pathophysiology of feline diabetes mellitus and its shared features with human type 2 diabetes, including pancreatic amyloid deposition. Based on the disease’s pathophysiology, this will include the discussion of treatment strategies that go beyond the current standard treatment with insulin.
