Abstract
A 10 -15â° secular trend in the d18O of marine sedimentary rocks (e.g., carbonate rocks, cherts) over Earth history has been ascribed to higher early surface temperatures or to a more 18O-depleted early ocean. This longstanding debate has persisted due to the dual effect of temperature and solution d18O on the oxygen isotope composition of marine precipitates. We constructed a new record of marine iron oxide d18O values, which suggests that the early ocean was 18O-depleted, and that the early climate was cool.
