Abstract
Despite concerted efforts to incorporate climate change impacts, formal threat assessments, such as Red Listing, still struggle to sufficiently incorporate global warming and ocean acidification impact considerations. The resultant disconnect between threat reality, evaluation, and conservation policy is exemplified by the current system-level threat facing coral reefs and their reliant biodiversity. This talk will focus on the coral viability crisis and suggest how we might improve the threat evaluation process to help optimise mitigation and adaptation policy. If we can get it right for corals the outlook for all live on Earth may yet be transformed.
