Language is constantly changing, and at any given time there is variation within and between groups. Social media has opened up exciting opportunities to study language variation and change at scale. First, I will present a study on measuring semantic change in Twitter using word embeddings on a corpus spanning 5.5 years. Second, I will present a study on measuring geographical language variation based on Reproducing Kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) representations. In both studies the lack of ground truth poses evaluation challenges. I will discuss results on both synthetic and empirical data.
